Society of Masters in Biomedical Science (SMBS)
More about the society
The Society of Masters in Biomedical Science (SMBS) was established by decision of the General Assembly of the Croatian Association of Laboratory Medicine held on November 17, 2023.
The society brings together professionals with a master’s degree in biomedical science who are engaged in professional, scientific, and educational work across all areas of biomedical science. It is represented by President Petra Medač Čorak, MSc in Biomedical Science, and Vice-President Domagoj Caban, PhD in Biomedical Science. This page provides key information about the society’s operations, previous and upcoming activities, and the latest developments in laboratory diagnostics in Croatia and internationally.

Biomedical Science – A Rapidly Advancing Field
Biomedical laboratory science is a fast-growing diagnostic discipline.
Croatia, from a professional standpoint, successfully follows European and global developments in the field, although it still lacks sufficient administrative and legal regulation. Recommendations from the European Association of Biomedical Scientists (EPBS) promote harmonization of professional standards across EU countries. The minimum education entry standard is an EQF Level 6 degree (bachelor’s), with a recommendation to pursue further education to implement more advanced analytical methods, quality management, and laboratory operations.
Thanks to technological advancement, new analytical methods have become available in clinical laboratories.
This creates the need for maintaining and improving quality, developing guidelines, and standardizing analytical procedures to ensure accurate, reliable results. Contemporary methods also ensure sustainable development of healthcare in the field of diagnostics.. The society was founded to advance laboratory medicine by strengthening the expertise and competencies of professionals with master’s degrees in biomedical science. It also fosters collaboration with regulatory authorities, advocates for professional recognition through legal frameworks, and supports lifelong scientific and professional development in collaboration with Croatian educational institutions.
Our members are actively involved in society activities, professional meetings, and continuing education. They benefit from ongoing communication and knowledge exchange, all with the goal of improving collaboration and elevating the profession.
